I understand the details needed for those that didn't read The Surgeon but even if you didn't it became insanely unnecessary. This read like a debut, repetition continuously. What a total let down, I cannot believe this was written by the same author, The Surgeon was almost perfection in my mind, so to get a total boring, what was the point follow up was beyond disappointing. When Hoyt escapes from prison and teams up with his blood brother to take revenge on the policewoman who put him there, the pace of this truly frightening thriller picks up and drives the narrative to its violent conclusion. Political interference from an FBI agent who seems to know more about the Dominator than anyone else only intensifies Jane's determination to solve the case. Warren Hoyt may still be behind bars, but Jane thinks there's a connection between him and the man the police call the Dominator, based on the way this new fiend subdues and violates his victims before he kills them. This book counts towards my participation in the Global Reading Challenge (North America).Boston detective Jane Rizzoli hasn't completely recovered from the near-death experience at the hands of a serial killer ( The Surgeon) that left her scarred and scared, but that doesn't keep her from going after a copycat murderer whose modus operandi is disturbingly familiar. Other titles by Tess Gerritsen: The Surgeon, Keeper of the Bride, Keeping the Dead, Girl Missing Gerritsen expertly builds the tension through The Apprentice – its suspense and compelling characters made this a book very hard to put down.įind out more about this book: The Apprentice (The Book Depository), The Apprentice (Amazon) I wouldn’t exactly recommend this novel for the squeamish however – I enjoy TV shows such as Bones, Criminal Minds and Silent Witness, so they may have hardened me somewhat to images of autopsy tables etc. I was surprised to find that although the descriptions of the murder scenes in this story were very graphic, I didn’t find them overly disturbing. Why? Although the book summary intrigued me, I was not sure about my tolerance for the gruesome details it would contain. I’d had The Apprentice on my TBR pile for quite a while. The insights Gerritsen offers the reader into the murderer’s mind that enforce the concept of hunter and prey are haunting. She is strong and opinionated, but she has baggage that influences her – from a previous murder case and from being one of the few females to have succeeded in a male dominated profession. Tess Gerritsen’s female protagonist, Boston homicide detective Jane Rizzoli, is a very real character. This novel is fast paced and a true thriller.
